My earliest memory? Well, let’s see…[break][break]
I must have been what, four or five? I was sitting on the bar. The room smelled of booze and rang with laughter. Mother’s Graveler was rolling around, two drinks in each hand. Mother was upstairs dealing with Catlin, and the new baby – Minette – and Father was telling the story of why our place is called the Emboar’s Head. I think I always knew I wanted to take it over. Just a little inn at the end of the lane, every day filled with songs and stories and the constant flow of new people.[break][break]
‘Course, nothing lasts forever.[break][break]
But I’m getting ahead of myself.[break][break]
Remember when I found you, Nidda? It was just after I turned eight.[break][break]
As soon as I could walk on my own I was tagging along on the supply runs, just like we do now, though in those days, Father’s Machoke pulled the wagon. Anyway we were on the way back from a Bluefair run, when I heard a weird rattling inside one of the kegs. Father and Mother told me to pay it no mind, but I swear the noise got louder and louder as we went. I was a stubborn kid; I mean, I’m still a stubborn adult, you know. Anyway, we cracked the lid open and what do we see but a sleeping Dewpider. You’d drunk up the whole keg, it was no wonder you’d zonked right out![break]
[break]
Araquanid, nid.[break][break]
Of course you don’t remember. You were asleep.[break][break]
Aqua araqua.[break][break]
If that’s not how it was, then you tell me why you’re here.[break][break]
Qua.[break][break]
I begged Mother and Father to be allowed to keep you. Mother was disgusted, said “Ooh, that thing! It’s cost us far too much already! And it’s disgusting!” but Father knew I was going to go into a fit if he ignored me anymore, so he told me I could keep you on one condition. Well, two really. Take care of it, and don’t ever let it into the merchandise again. And hey, I did. All these years, you’ve stayed dry. Well, you know what I mean. You don’t drink. Not a drop, even when we swore it was okay, you’d earned your place in the family.[break][break]
Aqua, nid-nid, aquaqua.[break][break]
Yes, and I can’t thank you enough for helping the rest of us literally get back on the wagon all those times. I don’t know what I would have done without you after Father left on that crazy trip of his. Probably drank.[break][break]
We all had our ways of dealing with Father’s disappearance. Catlin started up a hat-making business down the block with some of her girl friends. Minette hung around the bar a lot, got married right fast and right young too, moved out to be a farmer in Rosewyvern. I hardly ever see her now.[break][break]
And me? Well, I stayed at home, working the supply runs as usual like I’d been doing since I was thirteen or so, and whenever I’d feel lonely over Father, I’d hit the bottle. Some days I might have gone a little overboard.[break][break]
Araqua.[break][break]
I was not that bad.[break][break]
Araquanid ara? Nid. Quanid araquanid. Araquan--[break][break]
That was one time![break][break]
Raquanid.[break][break]
At least I had you. And you didn’t mind me crying on you. I guess being made of water helps. Not like Garri and Chamma. They fit right in at home, but they don’t really get me like you do.[break][break]
Garri. Oh, Garri. We were taking a tunnel up through the mountain when she fell on my face! I didn’t know wild Pokemon could be drunk![break][break]
Chamma was a bit more of a troublemaker, for sure. He’d get pissed at the side of the road and pick fights with travelers. He picked the wrong fight with you, though. Bet he wasn’t expecting you to evolve right then![break][break]
Araq, nid-anid.[break][break]
You know it. High five, girl.[break][break]
Araq?[break][break]
...Right.[break][break]
Where was I?[break][break]
Mother was so happy when when Father came back. She wanted to throw him a party, but I said no. I was twenty at the time, already grown to his height, and I told him in no uncertain terms that whatever was out there beyond the kingdom’s borders, him and all of his buddies had no right to just up and leave their families like that. He told Mother how much I’d grown. I know in hindsight it was a compliment, but at the time I was too mad to care.[break]
[break]
‘Specially because he’d forgotten everything. I don’t know what’s out there, and I don’t care. If he couldn’t be bothered to remember, it must not have been that special anyway. I like it here in the Kingdom. We’ve traveled all over, and from what I can see, we’re happy and peaceful in our own little corner of the world, and that’s how it should be. Life is good, isn’t it, Nidda? Just like the road, it’s not always smooth, but we’re gonna pull through like we’ve always done.[break][break]
Phew, that took a while. C’mon, let’s see if Mother needs help in the kitchen.
